Bridge the Chasm

True compassion is more than flinging a coin to a beggar; it is not haphazard and superficial. It comes to see that an edifice which produces beggars needs restructuring"               - Martin Luther King, Jr.

THE NUMBER ONE PRIORITY OF THE OAKLAND UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT NEEDS TO BE:

As part of our mission we are committed to rescuing the 1,000+ drop-outs hitting Oakland’s streets each year. Whether they fall into crime and prison, drug addiction, poverty, or by death or disability from violent crime, their life is over before it begins. To do this we are taking the following actions:

THE ART OF 'SEEING' MATHEMATICS

We held a professional development for three hours on Saturday, February 8, for seven teachers and the Principal of Martin Luther King, Jr. Elementary in West Oakland. We taught the teachers our methodology of teaching number sense and fluency in adding and subtracting within 20 - "the Art of 'Seeing'". The Principal was very impressed with the program and has offered to introduce us to other Principals in West Oakland. We hope to offer this professional development to all Oakland elementary teachers this summer. learn more

LIFE SKILLS

We have been at Frick Middle School in East Oakland since mid-January doing our Life Skills program with four full time coaches. Suspensions and students being sent from the classroom for behavior problems gone down and the Principal credits us with him being able to focus on being a leader and educator, instead of a fireman - dealing with discipline problems all day. It's gone so well, we have reduced the number of Life Skills Coaches from four to three. agree
